A connection is a link that brings two people together. It’s the result of an action you take to initiate or continue a conversation with someone. While today’s trend in online marketing dictates that you can communicate one-on-one with your market, making an emotional connection that leads to a solid relationship is best achieved through personal interaction.

1) Find something in common — It could be in the business arena, such as a trade group you belong to, or on a personal level, such as the place you grew up. The point is that anything in common will create a connection that says, “We’re not that different from one another,” which is the first step toward trust.
2) Uncover their interests and needs — Let the other person do most of the talking. Find out what interests the person by asking a question, then listen to their answer. Take note of points in the conversation when they become more engaged. That information will help you connect.
3) Give before you get — Don’t just ask the person for their business card. First, offer them an idea, a resource, or a referral. Give them a taste of what it’s like to work with you.
4) Ask for what you need — Conversely, be prepared to share your own needs with those you meet, so they can offer some assistance to you. This will help to prevent the conversation from becoming a one-sided affair.
